Most Followed LGBTs on Twitter

2012 was certainly the year of the LGBT. There were memorable comings-out, such as those of CNN host Anderson Cooper, actor Matt Bomer, and the plethora of Olympians, like U.S. soccer player Megan Rapinoe. We also declared victory for marriage equality in three states during the November election, which also saw Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin elected as the first openly gay member of the U.S. Senate. We’ve come a long way since the time we feared arrest for simply having a cocktail together. The country loves us! But let’s face it, if it weren’t for visibility in the media, we would surely not have advanced as quickly or as much as we have. That’s why we find it so important to research and deliver the year’s most “wanted” LGBTs. For the first time, this week we’re delivering a daily list of the most followed, most viewed, most liked, and most searched people within our community on the world’s most popular sites. To kick off the list, we bring to you 2012’s Most Followed LGBTs on Twitter:

Advocate Art Condom ContestLos Angeles County is hosting a condom wrapper design contest, sponsored by ONE condoms. The winning wrapper designs will be featured on one million and one condoms distributed across LA.

A panel of six judges (including blogger Perez Hilton, and myself, The Advocate's creative director and co-founder of The Stigma Project) will narrow the selection down to 50. From those chosen, the public will be able to go online to and vote for their top 10 designs.

What are we looking for as judges? We’re looking for designs that represent Los Angeles in a creative, unique way. Whether it be a particular neighborhood or city, from Venice to West Hollywood, or creating an all new logo for Los Angeles to call it’s own. And if you want to throw a little humor in as well, that never hurts.

The deadline to submit a design is this Sunday, June 17, and you must be a resident of L.A. County and 18 or older.

Advocate Art Dept Perez HiltonLong gone are the days of bullying and being subjected to fat jokes for Perez Hilton. Today, in reaction to speculation that he lost weight via surgery, Hilton released an upbeat lip-synch video of him dancing around in his underwear to the Kat Graham song “Put Your Graffiti On Me.” On his website he states:

It’s been hard work! VERY HARD work! Over a long period of time! We have done it the slow and painful way! Naturally! We’ve really reprogrammed our brain and changed our whole life! We truly are happier than ever! We just wanna dance! So that’s what we did.
